The brief from the clients was to convert a mishmash of awkwardly connected small rooms containing the kitchen, utility and small pantry into a functional whilst attractive space. The existing kitchen had a small island which was more of an obstacle then a help and storage space was sparse and difficult to access.

Per got the go ahead to institute suitable structural changes. To improve flow and increase useable space, the wall between kitchen and utility room was removed, also closing up one of the doors to the back hall and replacing the other with a clear glass paneled door.

A new window was installed into the west wall for more light. By taking down part of an original wall which was 400mm thick, replacing it with a 100mm wall and putting in an RSJ and, allowed Per to increase the space in the back hallway and design this as a new utility area.

The kitchen now comprises two mirrored L shapes, which ensure plenty of working space. The Storage wall in dramatic smoked Elm finish adds texture and depth to the now brighter kitchen. The complementary back panel behind the slender horizontal display cabinets and the wall units on the other wall combine to balance the lighter lacquer fronts and the bright stainless steel and Silestone worktops.

The inclusion of a breakfast bar means the new room has a strong social element that doesn’t comprise floor space. This also connects the kitchen to the dining room.
